iSpeed Date is the 3rd episode of Season 3 of iCarly and the 53rd episode overall. It premiered on September 26, 2009.

Plot

Ridgeway is sponsoring an upcoming Girls' Choice Dance and Carly has her heart set on going with a boy named Nate, but after she accidentally spits in Nate's eye, he says Rebecca Berkowitz already asked him. When Carly has trouble finding another date to the dance, Sam recommends using iCarly as a means of doing so, but Carly objects to the idea. At the end of their next show, Sam handcuffs Carly to a chair, duct-tapes her mouth shut and asks for Seattle-area boys to apply to be Carly's date for the Girl's Choice Dance (the camera zooms in on the gagged Carly, who can't speak but is squealing her objection so Sam puts a plant in front of her). Carly insists that in retaliation for doing that, Sam should ask Gibby to the dance since no one else did, but Sam becomes enraged when he turns her down.

When the gang is overwhelmed by the amount of boys who show up (752), they hold a speed-dating session. Carly finally finds a boy, Austin. She brings him on a double-date with Freddie, who gets stuck with Magic Malika, a girl who's fixated on performing magic tricks, because he took too long to reply to 2 other girls.

Despite being rejected by Gibby, Sam goes to his house and insists on taking him to the dance, only to find that he already has a date (a girl named Tasha, who is apparently out of his league). He didn't want to go to the dance because Tasha doesn't go to his school, the dance was girl's choice, and they're spending the night at his house. Sam sees no point in staying and walks away.

After the dance, Carly, Freddie, Malika, and Austin spend time at the Groovy Smoothie, where Malika performs tricks at Freddie's expense until she realizes she's out past her curfew, and vanishes her way home. Carly fares no better with her date and she demands he leave after he refuses to let her say a whole sentence throughout the entire date. Thus, Carly and Freddie are left alone there. Freddie asks Carly to dance, and Carly accepts. They have a slow dance together at the Groovy Smoothie, which Sam walks in on. Deciding to leave them alone, Sam exits without a word with a hurt expression on her face.

Spencer has a new workout app that keeps going off at numerous times. He uses it as a way to get fitter but he eventually quits it when it tells him to do sit-ups for 10 seconds.

Trivia

• The traditional name for a girl's-choice dance is Sadie Hawkins Dance.
• This episode impacts both Creddie and Seddie. Due to this, the episode is very significant.
• Part of this episode is very similar to the endings of iStakeout and iThink They Kissed.
• Dan Schneider himself confirmed that Sam was jealous of seeing Carly and Freddie dancing together, implying that she already had feelings for Freddie.
• This is the first major episode for Creddie, as it's the first time it's made clear that Carly may return Freddie's affection for her.
• The first time we see Carly being "overpowered" by Sam—she gets handcuffed and duct taped.
• Carly and Freddie were scripted to kiss, but it was taken out because it interferes with future episodes, (iSaved Your Life). A picture of this kiss can be found online.

  • Another guest star was Jordan Fisher as Clark, who only wanted to make out with Carly. He went on to appear in the [w:c:teenbeachmovie|Teen Beach]] franchise, the "Grease Live!" musical, and the Disney Channel show Liv and Maddie.
• During the speed dating scene in the Groovy Smoothie, there was a very large number of extras, all of them teenage boys. Dan Schneider observed that Miranda Cosgrove and Jennette McCurdy seemed very happy with the situation.
• The redheaded boy (Rick) that Carly meets during the speed dating would be the drummer of the band in iDo.
• The song playing while Carly and Freddie are slow-dancing together is called "Meant for Me" by Chrissy Chase. Many of the lyrics fit the moment and their relationship, very well.
• This episode had the first ever Creddie dance. There was also a Creddie kiss filmed for this episode, but it was cut.
  • Carly and Freddie would next share a dance in the revivial episodes iRobot Wedding and iMake New Memories.
    • Carly and Freddie dance to the song at the Groovy Smoothie in this episode, and would dance to it again at the same location, but as Shay What?! in the latter of the 2 revival episodes.
• This was the final episode to premiere before Nickelodeon USA had a major rebrand.

Allusions

• When Freddie arrives in the first scene, Sam calls him "Fredamame." Dan Schneider stated on his blog that this was a reference to the soy beans that he enjoys having at sushi bars.
• When Freddie mentions "Jamie" and "Ariana" asked him to the dance, it could be a possible reference to Jamie Lynn Spears from Dan Schneider's show Zoey 101, and Ariana Grande from his other shows, Victorious and Sam and Cat.

Character Revelations

• Gibby's last name is "Gibson", as seen on his mailbox which says "The Gibsons".
• Freddie has a picture of his mom on his PearPhone. His mom may have made him put her as his background to prevent him from putting up anything else.

Goofs

• During the filming of iCarly, Sam and Freddie have large colorful push pins on their laps. When they stand up, the push pins are gone.
• Spencer said the program gives 180 ten second workouts a day. However, he does squat thrusts for 16 seconds, while he does windmills with Carly and Sam for at least 19 seconds before the scene changes. Only the V steps workout lasts 10 seconds.
  • The hip swivel workout scene transitioned at the 8 second mark, so that one may have lasted 10 seconds, but it is not confirmed.
• The boy extras waiting in line during the speed dating change around back and forth between each shot.
• When Spencer scares off the one boy while doing the hip swivel workout, there isn't another boy talking to Sam.
• After Malika's magic trick to Freddie's smoothie, he never puts the lid and straw back on the cup. When the camera cuts to Freddie after Austin talks about Celebrities Underwater and after he says "What's your deal?", the lid and straw are back on his smoothie. After Carly kicks Austin out, Freddie is seen putting the lid and straw back on his smoothie.
• When Malika realizes it is past her curfew, Austin's hand is seen shaking salt on the fries. In the next shot, he is holding a fry in the same hand.
• Carly tells Austin he didn't let her finish one sentence all night, but she actually did get to finish a few sentences. Although she only got to finish very short sentences.

Running Gags

• Spencer's exercise app going off.
• Spencer audibly repeating the workout he has to do right before he starts, save for the sit-ups when he quits.
• Austin constantly interrupting Carly before she can finish her sentence.

Series Continuity

• Nate tells Carly Rebecca Berkowitz already asked him to the dane. She is seen in the extended version of iSaw Him First after Sam lies to the School Nurse, saying her name was Rebecca Berkowitz.
• This is the second episode where a character does squat thrusts, the first is iRue The Day.
• This is the second time Sam applied duct tape (the first was in iWant a World Record, where Sam used duct tape on an air horn to wake up Spencer; third time was in iSell Penny-Tees to treat a cut on a girl's arm).
• When Sam slams Gibby up against a locker, he says "Don't break my thumb again!". This is a reference to a line in iMake Sam Girlier. During Sam's birthday party, Gibby shared a memory of Sam breaking his thumb when he asked her to the junior high dance, a hint that he once had a crush on her.
• This is the first time Freddie laughs at Sam. She grabs him in retaliation.
• "Celebrities Underwater" is mentioned for the first time, but the name itself wouldn't be mentioned until Freddie watches it in IBelieve In Bigfoot.

Spencer: I heard you spit in his eye! Carly: How do you know that?! Spencer: I follow iCarly. Carly: [shocked] Sam tweeted it?!

Carly: You're in trouble! Sam: Who has urine trouble?

Carly: I'm not going to use our web show to beg for boys. I'd rather be alone and ... crotchety. Sam: [snickers] Crotchety. It's funny 'cause it sounds wrong.

[Sam handcuffs Carly to a chair and duct tapes her mouth] Sam: [pointing at Carly's duct-taped face] C'mon! Who wouldn't wanna go out with THIS! [Carly is unable to make any objections, but she squeals her obvious disapproval of Sam's idea to the audience]

Carly: I can't believe you embarrassed me like that in front of the whole web! Sam: Well, if you didn't want me to do it, then why didn't you say something? Carly: You duct-taped my mouth shut! Sam: Come on, you might get a really cool, cute guy! Carly: Or a psychopath with a chainsaw!

Sam: [after being turned down by Gibby] I asked him to the stupid dance and he said: "Nah, I'm good." Freddie: Did someone else already ask him? Sam: No! [Freddie smirks, and Sam grabs him] Freddie: [trying to keep himself from laughing] Not laughing! I'm not laughing!

Rick: Hi, I'm Rick. Carly: Hey, I'm Carly, and listen, I'm really sorry about this. I had no idea Sam was gonna even have this contest and then I thought, you know, maybe 10 or 15 guys would show up here. I had no idea there'd be this many, and I know it's not fair to only give you 15 seconds, but just do your best and we'll see how it goes. Rick: Okay, well ... [timer goes off] Carly: Whoops, sorry. Time's up. Next!

Spencer: So, you'd like to take Carly to the dance? Clark: I might rather just make out with her. Spencer: NEXT!

Kevin: I'm Kevin. Freddie: Freddie. So tell me about you, Kevin. Kevin: Well, I collect fishing lures, my bedtime is 9:30, and girls usually don't like me because I have an odd odor. Freddie: You know, I think you might be perfect for Carly.

[During the speed date] T-Bo: Just buy a bell pepper! Carly: No! T-Bo: $4.50! Carly: [frustrated] T-Bo!

Freddie [to a good-looking guy] You're a male model? Good-Looking Guy: Well, I was, but I quit modeling 'cause now I'm a lead singer in this really cool band, and we-- Freddie: Carly would hate you. Good-Looking Guy: But I ... Freddie: [gestures] Get out of here!

Spencer: [sits down on the couch with Carly] You're going to a dance tonight. With a new guy. So, I just think it's time you and I had a little talk about -- Carly: [stands up] I am NOT having this conversation! Spencer: Thank you SO much!!!

[After Austin arrives at Carly's to take her to the dance] Carly: Hey Austin! Wow, you look great. Austin: I was just gonna say that to you. Spencer: Okay okay, we're all super-attractive here!

Tasha: [Seeing Sam at Gibby's door] Who's she? Sam: [looking utterly confused] Who's you?

[After Malika sets Freddie's cup on fire] Carly: Yeah, I mean that was a pretty cool trick, but don't you think it's dangerous to-- Austin: One time, my parents took me and my brother camping, and we saw bears! Carly: [feigning interest] Did you? Freddie: Hey, wasn't my phone on the table a minute ago? Carly: Yeah, you set it down right after-- Austin: [continues] Four bears, big old paws ... [puts his hands up like a bear claw] GRRRRRRR!!!

[Malika drops Freddie's phone on his groin] Freddie: OWWW!!!! ... [pause] Well, that hurt.

[After Austin interrupts Carly and changes the subject several times] Carly: Shut up! Austin: What? I was just-- Carly: Shut up, shut up, SHUT UP! Austin: What's your deal? Carly: My deal is you haven't let me finish one sentence all night and I can't take it anymore! It's like you won't even let me-- Austin: What are you trying to say? Carly: [gets up and points at the door] GET OUTTA HERE!!! [Austin promptly runs out of the café] Freddie: And then there were two. Carly: [looks relieved] Yep, just us. Thank God ...

Freddie: [gets confident, flirty look and stands up, looking at Carly invitingly] Carly: [smiles] What? Freddie: Don't you think we both deserve one nice dance tonight, with a person we don't wanna kill? Carly: [smiles happily without hesitation and gets up] Absolutely. Freddie: [looks confident] Hey, T-Bo, turn up the music. [They smile at each other, and Carly puts her arms around his neck, and they start dancing, with happy, content looks on their faces. Carly rests her head on his shoulder, and they hold each other close and close their eyes]
