"Detention!" |
iGot Detention is the nineteenth episode of the first season of iCarly.
Plot
The iCarly team plans to make a special 50th webcast, they got all over Ridgeway Junior High School, but when Sam gets detention from Mr. Howard on the same day they planned it, they have to find a way to do it anyway. Carly and Freddie get the idea to do the webcast from the detention room-- and attempt to get detention themselves. Initially their attempts to get detention fail when Freddie attempts to steal a stapler, Carly loosens the bolts of a chair with a ratchet, and they possibly did other attempts not shown. Carly then attempts to pull a fire alarm, and coincidentally, a microwave catches on fire. Sam is blessed that she got out of doing a report on Scarlotte Web. However, Carly finally gets detention after slamming a locker door in frustration too loud and getting caught by Mr. Howard, but Freddie still fails to get a detention. After Sam explains that you can't be in the room unless you have detention but adds that whenever Mr. Howard's the detention advisor he's almost never in the room because he's usually in the teachers' lounge watching the geometry channel, Freddie gets the idea to hide in a closet in the room so they can still film the show.
When detention starts and Mr. Howard leaves the room, Carly and Sam explain their situation to the other students, and that they've got plans for what the should do if Mr. Howard comes back: they have a student named Claire be the lookout, say "dippity-do" if he comes, and another student wear a hat with a hidden camera in it so they can still film when Mr. Howard's in the room, and the iCarly trio also has their friend Wesley ready to distract him in the case of an emergency. He would beatbox loudly in the main hallway. The show goes well but Mr. Howard comes back in the room constantly due to hearing noises from the teacher's lounge. At one point he sees their hangman game of "Mr. Howard Eats Pants." he then takes the time to insult Principal Franklin and decides to stay put, until the distraction from Wesley is activated.
Unfortunately, the iCarly trio and the others are ultimately caught. When Mr. Howard is yelling at them, Principal Franklin appears, who reveals that he and his family (his daughters in particular) are fans of iCarly, and explains that he heard Mr. Howard call him a "weak, spineless fool" during the webcast. Principal Franklin sends Mr. Howard to his office, releases the students from detention, and joins Carly and Sam in closing the webcast.
Subplot
Spencer gathers up a bunch of golf balls that he got from a local golf course and sells them to get art supplies, which he uses to build a 10'2" coffee cup filled with 500-gallons of decaf coffee. He eventually starts swimming around in the coffee, mostly to try and look for his cellphone, which he accidentally dropped into the coffee. At the very end of the episode, Carly, Sam, and Freddie join him, and they all have fun swimming in the coffee.

Trivia
- Assuming that the iCarly trio does only one webcast per week, this episode takes place nearly one full year after the events of iPilot.
- Unlike any other iCarly episode, the American TV closed captions for this episode has the speaker's name followed by "SOT" (Sound On Tape?) before their dialogue. Example:
- Freddie SOT: [unconvincingly] Ca-caw!
- Carly SOT: Do it like a bird!
- Freddie SOT: [more like a bird] CA-CAW!!
- Kevin West, who played Mr. Angst on Phil of the Future, guest stars as the unnamed teacher who brings out the burning microwave from the teacher's lounge.
- This episode features Spencer’s smallest role in the series, with him appearing only three times.
- Below is a list of things Carly and Freddie tried to do to get detention, with successful attempts marked in bold and reasons for failed attempts in italics:
- Freddie: Stole a stapler from his teacher’s desk. (The teacher was unfazed, simply reclaimed it with a “thank you” and moved on.)
- Carly: Sabotaged a chair to make her teacher fall. (The teacher used the incident as an excuse to take a two-month paid vacation.)
- Freddie: Wrote “FREDDIE SAYS PRINCIPAL FRANKLIN SUCKS EGGS” on a window outside Principal Franklin’s office. (The janitor cleaned it off before Principal Franklin ever saw it.)
- Carly: Set off a fire alarm by throwing a banana at it. (A coincidental fire in the teacher’s lounge made the alarm seem legitimate.)
- Carly: Slammed a locker. (Mr. Howard overheard the noise and gave her detention.)
- Freddie: Threw Principal Franklin’s PearPhone on the floor. (Principal Franklin assumed Freddie knew the PearPhone was indestructible.)
- This episode marks the only time Freddie is seen shirtless.
- Although PearPhones may have appeared in previous episodes, this episode marks the first direct reference to them in the series.
- This episode marks the first appearance of Mr. Howard.
Allusions
- The coffee cup Spencer builds is labeled Skybucks, a parody of Starbucks, the famous coffee company that originated in Seattle, where iCarly is set.
- The scented markers Carly takes from Freddie's locker parody Mr. Sketch scented markers.
- Pear Phones parody the iPhone.
- The line “dippity-do” references the song “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” from the Disney film Song of the South.
- Sam mentions a book called "Scarlett's Web," a parody of Charlotte's Web.
- Crusty Cream is a parody of Krispy Kreme.
- Mr. Howard mentioned The Geometry Channel, likely a parody of the National Geographic channel.
- The story is loosely based on The Breakfast Club, a film that Schneider’s Bakery later paid homage to in Victorious.
Character Revelations
To be added
Goofs
- Freddie installs a surveillance system, including a camera, in order to determine who has been breaking into his locker and stealing things (e.g. his fruit-scented markers). This is illogical, because anyone breaking into his locker in the future would most likely steal the camera.
- When Carly throws her banana to activate the fire alarm it lands some distance away, but after the teacher comes out of the teachers' lounge and tells her the microwave oven has burst into flames the banana has moved across the floor and is lying at the teacher's feet. A sandwich can also be seen in the same shots.
- Freddie hides his camera and computer equipment in the closet, then uses a ladder to climb up to enter the window - this doesn't make much sense because he could simply have hidden in the closet along with his equipment beforehand.
- Mr. Howard should not be in charge of detention if he prefers to watch TV on the Geometry Channel instead of watching the students in the detention room.
- During the web show, Sam always pushes the same button on her remote, but it has a different effect every time she does (this includes the time Principal Franklin pressed the button).
- Wesley's spoon disappears when he throws a water balloon at Mr. Howard.
- When Wesley throws a water balloon at Mr. Howard, it hits the right side of his jacket only. Yet when he goes to the detention room to find the kids doing iCarly, the entire front of the jacket is wet.
- When Mr. Howard gets hit with the water balloon, he has a dark mark on his jacket, but when he goes to the classroom, the mark has faded. Realistically, his jacket would still be darker due to the water in the short trip it takes to get to the classroom.
- Principal Franklin says that Mr. Howard called him a "weak, spineless fool," but Mr. Howard never said the word fool. He only said Principal Franklin was weak and spineless. This must’ve been a script error.
- When Carly slammed her locker and got detention, she said that there were three more minutes left in school. However, the bell rings thirty seconds after this.
- Doing an iCarly webcast would have caused noise disruption so Carly would have had to turn the sound off.
- Carly, Sam and Freddie shouldn't have gone home between regular school and detention. While Sam's offense would've warranted a Saturday detention, this definitely would have been the case with Carly.
- One of the times Freddie came out of the closet, on the screen of his laptop, the section where the 'iCarly' plays it said ICARLY, instead of showing what was happening on the cap cam.
Running Gags
- Carly and Freddie trying to get detention.
- The kids having to go back and forth between filming and pausing the web show.
Series Continuity
- This marks the second and last appearance of Rip-Off Rodney until iReunited and It Felt OK, a Season 3 episode of the revival series.
